From the outside looking in, the census David ordered was harmless. What is wrong in doing this?? It was David's motive. He was feeling 'proud' of his army or the might or size of it. He made the choice to do this. Satan tempted him but he made the choice. What are the motives behind our actions? Are they for God's praise? His glory? Or do they have the appearance of good, and our motives are self serving? As good as our actions may seem from the outsde, God knows what our hearts motives are. I have to ask myself this when I want to do something 'good'. Is it so I get recognition? Is it to make me feel good? Do I do it because I feel obligated? Or do I do it, because God first loved me and gave his only Son so I may live free. It should be in response to God's love in an act of faith to him and to glorify him. People should see Christ in our actions, because if they see us, we are missing the target.
