Are you carrying too many sticks?

I love being outdoors, especially with my two boys Caleb and Andrew. Caleb is seven and Andrew will turn three this weekend. Both of the Knight boys like to go hiking, but it’s mainly for the easy access to the rocks and the sticks. Caleb is a bit of a rock snob. He won’t keep just any rock. He only keeps the best. Andrew is less picky. He doesn’t care about quality, only quantity. He’ll love Walmart one day.

The problem is he tries to carry them all.

At some point he reaches his stick limit, but he doesn’t realize he’s reached his stick limit. Each time he stoops down to pick up a stick, he drops another one. He reaches to pick up the one he dropped, and another one falls. His frustration escalates, followed closely by whining and complaining. He can’t enjoy the walk because he’s not content with how many sticks he has.

We carry too much don’t we? We try to pick up more junk and agree to more responsibilities than we can manage. At some point, we start dropping things, and we feel the frustration. We’re not enjoying the journey.

When I’m walking with Andrew, eventually he’ll give me most of his sticks, and he’ll enjoy the walk knowing that I’m carrying the load. To him, those sticks were heavy, but not to me. He thought those sticks were so important to his walk. But I knew there wasn’t much value in them.

I think you get the point.

If you are a Christian, you don’t have to carry those sticks. Give them to your Father?

“Pile your troubles on God’s shoulders—he’ll carry your load, he’ll help you out. He’ll never let good people topple into ruin.” – Psalm 55:22 (MSG)
