Interesting, because up until now it is the kind of story that ends with, " and the Lord routed the philistines and every last one was slaughtered". What's the difference?

The difference is that God was missing. They were doing all the right things without the right one on board, and they failed.

What a terrible mistake to move ahead of the Lord...
