Mankind United - God Disobeyed
Adam was given commandment by God to fill and subdue the earth. These commands were also reiterated to Noah. As we look at the descendants of Noah's sons, we see the names of many nations come into being. The people of Babel were aware that they must disperse according to what had been commanded to them, that the earth might be filled with mankind and subdued. They came together at Babel to carve out their own destiny in direct defiance. The common reading here, that God was worried that mankind would become unstoppable, is in error. The issue at hand was the unrestrained wickedness that had taken hold of mankind, and that unless God broke the unity of mankind in language and culture, God's plan of redemption would be impossible.
In His sovereign plan, the multiplicity of nations and diversity of cultures was decreed. In His commands to Adam and to Noah, the intent was for mankind to spread over the earth.
