I always used to read this verse and feel a little bit ripped off. Is Jesus saying the really bad sinner who is redeemed has a more intense experience than someone like me, who isn't an axe murderer?

No. That is not what Jesus is saying. Sin is sin in the eyes of God. There are no degrees. We are ALL in need of a Savior....badly.

I think Jesus was trying to tell the disciples that the reason the woman "loves much" is because she truly realizes how sinful she was...and maybe the disciples had not yet come to how sinful they were.

I am a sinful man with unclean lips. I need redemption. When we finally decide to really confront our sinful condition, we too will be weeping at His feet, worshipping him with EVERYTHING we have.

Any other experience is us fooling ourselves that we are somehow better than we really are.
