Kingdom Learning; See One, Do One, Teach One
Thirty years ago as a young missionary doctor in the mountains of Nepal I quickly learnt the mantra "See One, Do One, Teach One". The meaning was simple. Watch a senior colleague do a procedure or operation. Do one yourself. Then teach someone how to do the same.
Jesus teaches His disciples in the same way. In the first verse of Chapter 8, Luke tells us that Jesus travelled from village to village, and town to town, with His disciples - proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, casting out evil spirits, and healing disease.
Now it's their turn. And Chapter 8 is their textbook. In the first half Jesus summarises kingdom theology, and in the second half He shows them kingdom practice - casting out demons and healing the sick. 55 verses later they are ready to be sent out, with the same power and authority, and for the same purpose. They have seen. Now they must do.
Practical discipleship is learnt. But not primarily from books. We learn by doing as Jesus did. Proclaiming the Kingdom, driving out the forces of darkness, and healing the sick. Real discipleship is revealed in what we do.
