we are all guilty

As human beings whenever we read the events that take place in the Bible, we tend to view ourselves as the victor. We fool ourselves into thinking "those silly Pharisees...why were they so blind to not see the truth about Jesus?" or we read about the disciples and we think "oh Peter, I can't believe that he would deny Jesus like that..."

We like to think of ourselves as the "good guy". We don't like to admit that more often than not we actually resemble the failure of the story. But Romans 1-2 make it crystal clear: the bad news is...we are lost. Instead of worshiping the One True God we started to make up ideas about what God is like, and in the process of trying to become wise, we instead became utter fools. We started to worship the created things instead of the Creator.

In chapter 2 Paul challenges us to ask ourselves the hard internal questions "you say that it's wrong to steal, but do you steal?" and so on. How do our lives match up to the holiness of Jesus? Are we living our lives perfectly, according to God's will? Or are we sinners in DESPERATE need of a savior?

We need to remember that without Jesus we are lost, condemned by the law and without hope....BUT the good news (the Gospel) doesn't end in chapter 2. The answer to our sinful/broken/lacking hearts, thank God, is in Christ Jesus.
