why do you say such hurtful things?

Why do we so often say the things we know will hurt someone's feelings? Why do we love "devouring words"?

God, please help me to follow the advice of Thumper's mom: if I can't say something nice, I should say nothing at all. Better yet, help me to think of something nice. Just because sometimes it's the things you don't say that speak the loudest.
