I'm saved by WORKS!!!
If you've been in the church or around Christians long enough, you've probably heard that we're saved by grace alone. Let me real clear: This is absolutely true. What I'm attempting to do is to say the same thing, but in a different way.
Think about it...what is grace? It's being given what you don't deserve, right? Ok...so what is God's "grace" exactly?
I like to see it as a transaction. We've buried ourselves in debt. Jesus pays it all off. We now owe nothing. Our balance is 0.00. That's rad! But... We're still broke. But, the next thing that Jesus does is deposit his wealth into our account. We now have a shared account with Christ, and now "insufficient funds" can't exist!
What exactly did Jesus deposit into our account?
Answer: Perfect Perfection. Righteousness.
Another way of looking at it is we now have a joint account with Mr. Perfect. His "perfect perfection" was earned by his living a perfect life. Jesus accomplished ALL the works and performance that the Law demands and ALL that is necessary to please God. He kept the Law...perfectly.
So, when I say, "I'm saved by works."...or "JUSTIFICATION is earned through WORKS & PERFORMANCE", the question becomes:
WHOSE work?
WHOSE performance?
My own? Definitely NOT!
Yours? Uhhh yikes! (I'm sure you're probably an angel:)
As awesome as we may think ourselves to be, the only thing we deposit is filthy rags...which, last I heard, wasn't a currency currently accepted in heaven:)
Our only option is to "get in on" the work and performance of someone with a PERFECT score...
I know only ONE: Jesus Christ.
