religion without righteousness
Here we see a devout religious man, the very high priest of israel, the man through whom God would speak to His people. He knew the law performed all therein and was probably obedient to a fault. Still his righteousness is as filthy rags.
We are reminded that this man bound by the law and religiousness of his system and they could not grant righteousness. Paul says this beautifully in Romans. Righteousness comes by faith, and no ritualistic or religious system can make you right with God. Righteousness comes by faith, faith in the redemption by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The devil will come to accuse us, using the law, and he's right, we've all fallen short, but he lies! Our righteousness is in Jesus, who is propitiation for us, has paid the price and we are washed clean, pulled out from the fire at the cost of his excruciating death and redirection.
Religion kills, Christianity has nothing to do with religion. We are people who believe.
