This story is incredible. A deaf mute- no ability to talk or hear was brought to Jesus. I'm not sure why Jesus decided to put his fingers into the man's ears or why he put his spit on the man's tongue because he could have just said to him, be healed and he would have been healed. If I would speculate, many it is because Jesus wanted this to be an intimate encounter, not just another miracle. Three things tell me this:
1) Jesus took him aside from the crowd, just the two of them together.
2) Jesus put his fingers in his ears- this man could not hear but he could feel Jesus' fingers in the place that he was most damaged- his ears.
3) He touched the man's tongue with his saliva- this seems a little weird but it shows so much volunerability both from Jesus and the man. You can't get much more intimate than sharing saliva with each other.
Jesus desires intimate encounters with us, not just head knowledge about him. We were created to be in an intimate relationship with God.
