It's who you know...
I'm always intrigued by this statement that this generation neither knew the Lord or what he had done for Israel. How did that happen? How is it that they weren't instructed? How is it that they weren't steeped in the knowledge of God? Why did the previous generations give up on God?
Maybe the generation before them (the one between Joshua and them) just had it too easy. No big fights. No slavery. No miracle provision. Just a nice life in the promised land. Could it be the same for us?
When things are easy, faith is weak. Our need for God seems superfluous. Quite possibly, we need battles to keep us on track spiritually. Without them we settle into ourselves, overlooking our desperate need for God's presence. I'm not in to praying for trials, life gives enough to satisfy me. But I do understand how forging ahead in my calling and reaching my community with love demands a huge need of God's wisdom and power. Satisfaction may be one of the single biggest killers of faith.
Has life become too easy and the need for God too small? Maybe it's time to take on some new kingdom challenges.
