A Gem of Hope

In the midst of extreme sadness and grievously difficult circumstances, of a destroyed Jerusalem and a people in exile, Jeremiah pauses to share this beautifully inspired contemplation. Though shattered and lying in the dust, the prophet's life finds hope.

Even in the darkest moments, we can always know that God's mercies appear new each morning. God's faithfulness is great and supremely reliable. As one of my favorite hymns, drawn from this passage, continues, "All I have needed Thy hand hath provided, Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me."

God does not delight in the grief and affliction of "the children of men." He sovereignly allows it, and we can respond to such circumstances by meditating on His character and quietly, patiently waiting for His rescue. Or we can revel in gloom and self-pity. In the darkest moments we have the opportunity to please God and draw from the vast resources of His loving kindness.

A couple times in my life I have turned to this passage for comfort. Like Jeremiah, we can find true hope in God.
