I. The Name of the Book - Deuteronomy
A. Gr. Deuteronomion - made up of two Greek words: - “Deuter” - second; and “Nomos”.
B. Three Hebrew titles used for the book.
1. Elleh Haddbharim - These the words (1:1)
2. Sepher Thochakhoth - Book of Rebukes
3. Mishneh Hattora — Recapitulation or repetition of the law (17:18)

II. The Author of the Book - Moses
A. His name appears 38 times in the Book, and in sev-eral places it claims to be written was by him (1:1; 31:9, 22, 24-27)
B. Other Biblical writers refer to it as having been writ-ten by Moses.
1. O. T. (2 Chr. 25:4; cf. Deut. 24:16)
2. N. T. (Rom. 10:19; cf. Deut. 32:21)
C. The Jews of Jesus’ day believed Moses was the au-thor (Lk. 20:28; cf. Deut. 25:5-6)
D. Jesus claimed Moses as the author (Matt. 19:7-9; cf Deut. 24:1-4; Jn. 5:45-47; cf. Deut. 18:15)
E. Obviously Moses did not write ch. 34. Joshua is its probable author.

III. The Recipients of the Book
A. Originally delivered as spoken messages to the New Generation of Israelites that was to enter the Promise Land (1:1-3)
B. Ultimately written and presented to the Levitical priests to be preserved with the Ark of the Covenant (31:9, 24-26)

IV. The Date of the Book
A. Written between 1410-1400 B.C.
B. Covers about the last 70 days of Israel’s wilderness wanderings (Deut. 1:3;34:5, 8; Josh. 4:19)

A. Seventeen N.T. Books quote Deuteronomy a total of 90 times.

C. Jesus quoted Deuteronomy to summarize the Law (Mt. 22:37)
D. It contains the first reference to the children of Belial (13:13)
E. It has the first mention of death by hanging on a tree (21:22-23)

X. Practical Applications from the Book
A. STOP - and consider Gods faithfulness in the past.
B. LOOK - at the holiness of God as revealed in His law and expected in His people.
