This verse is one of the most grace-filled statements in the Bible. God responds out of His nature, rather than His emotions. This is why He provides forgiveness through Christ Jesus...it is His nature to be merciful and gracious.

The caveat here is tragic, however. Eventually, from time to time, God did let His anger flare up. This is not his emotional act however; it is still an act of His nature...the part of His nature we don't like to talk about: His justness.

The Holiness of God is a two-sided coin. On one side God is love. On the other side God is just. Because God is love He must provide mercy and Grace. Yet because He is just, He must also provide punishment for sin.

If we do not respond to God's love, one day we will receive His justice. Choose the former. Always choose the former.
