Holy Mutterings
The Psalmists writes that the person who meditates on God’s Word will be blessed, or full of joy (NLT). Meditating on God’s Word day and night leads a person to become like a tree planted by streams of water. God’s law nourishes the soul just as water nourishes the tree. The person’s life will prosper and see fruit in season. When storms come (and they will), the tree will stand because it is firmly planted. This is a life that will not wither under the stresses and trials of this world. One of my New Year’s Resolutions every year is to meditate more and more on God’s Law. I want my roots to grow down and be nourished by the water of God’s revelation.
What does it mean to meditate? Meditating on God’s Law is more than just reading from a daily list of readings or checking something off the daily to-do list. Meditating on God’s Law involves fixing our minds on the things of God, thinking about them continuously, carrying them with us wherever we go, branding them on our hearts. The Hebrew word here actually comes from the same word used to describe the coo of a pigeon or the growl of a lion. For a human being it is to mutter, moan or read in undertone. Have you ever been so obsessed when something that you unwittingly walk around muttering or talking about it under your breath? Whatever the thought is, it has consumed us and it controls us…sometime in a bad way. But, when we are controlled and obsessed with God’s law and following His way, it leads to life. I hope this year is a year filled with muttering God’s word to myself wherever I go and whatever I am doing.
