Believe and Obey
In a day and time when our language has evolved to the point where written English is incapable of communicating the essence of one's expression; where one can love the Dodgers, love Lamborghini's, love Graeter's ice cream, and love their children, it seems that inflection and context and multiple adjectives become necessary to give full detail. So, what does it mean to believe in something or someone? What does it mean when someone says that they believe in us? What do you mean when you say that you believe in Jesus?
Is it just that you believe He existed? Is it that you believe He will save you from Hell? Is it that you believe that He is God's one and only Son? Is it that you believe Him to be fully God in the flesh? Is it that you believe Him to be so much more than just a man that you are willing to follow His directions to the death?
Thank God for John 3:36 where belief and obedience are not necessarily used interchangeably, but when it comes to a belief that rescues us from the wrath of God obeying Jesus cannot be ignored. We don't get the fringe benefits of Heaven and eternal life by just saying, "I believe."
Instead of asking people if they believe in Jesus maybe we should start asking them, "Can anyone give a testimony as to why they think you believe in Jesus?" My goal in doing that would not be to exclude in order to boost my elitist ideals, but to exclude in order to not mislead someone to Hell.
