They were seeking their own fame and glory.

Nimrod built the first post-flood cities. And the Tower of Babel is in one of his cities, Babylon, in the area of Babylonia.

God didn't destroy the city, he just stopped the people from continuing to build it.

God caused them to spread out all over the world because of the confusion of their language.
