All throughout Luke 9 we see death and life parallels.
V. 9 Herod talks about having John the Baptist beheaded. Herod was evil.
v.10 - An aside note - note the disciples answered to Jesus, they gave him an acct of all they had done. Just like we will on judgment day.
v. 13 - Here Jesus tells the disciples that they can give the crowd something to eat. And the miracle that follows is rather cool. Remember God created everything out of nothing, so for Him to multiply food out of food is no big deal. I bet that would've been cool to watch.
v. 22 - Jesus tells them that he is going to suffer many things by the RELIGIOUS LEADERS (note - most religious leaders, even today, are nothing but hypocrites) and be killed and then rise on the third day.
This verse is really a prophecy, which the disciples didn't understand at the time.
v 23 - Jesus continues the life/death theme here and tells the disciples about self denial and ultimately the value of the soul.
v. 29-30 - We see another death/life scene in that Jesus meets up with Moses and Elijah who were dead (but obviously not really, as they live in another realm) :)
v. 44 Then in verse 44 after we see Jesus casting out demons, he again, tells the disciples that he is going to be delivered into the hands of men - death again.
v. 55 - Jesus tells people he didn't come to destroy (aka kill) but rather to SAVE men's lives.
So if you look carefully in this chapter, death and life theme runs through it.
