An Amazing Example of Faith and Positive Expectation
I must have read this passage a hundred times before it struck me just how amazing it is. Consider yourself in Miriam's shoes, recalling that the context of this passage is that Pharaoh is having all the boy babies killed: how many of us would have viewed the proceedings from afar and in fear, horrified that, of all people, someone in Pharaoh's court would find her baby brother. But instead of standing back and expecting the worst, at the moment the princess says "oh, it's one of the Hebrew's children", before she even has a chance to decide what to do with it, Miriam is all of a sudden right there, asking if she would like her to get a Hebrew nurse for the baby! And then she gets their own mom! It's brilliant! God undoubtedly had a hand in her inspiration, but it was a very bold step of faith on her part; only it was not the kind of faith (as far as we can tell from the story as it's told here) that came from hearing from God that everything would turn out okay with her baby brother (although perhaps God did give her that confidence), but it was the faith of what might in some circles be thought of as "positive thinking". She wasn't content to stand back and expect the worst, but she fully made room for God to provide the absolute best!
May we all do the same.
