Read the Message Version
I really like to look at the message version here. it makes so much more sense. It is not about "will I perish to hell" and "eternal life". These are misleading foolish things to talk about when the verse really is discussing our life here and now and has nothing to do with our death. No one has to be destroyed, but can have a whole and lasting life. This is much more closely related to the story of the prodigal son than anything to do with the afterlife.
