Jesus close circle
In our world the closest relationships are blood relationships (i.e. immediate family: mother, father, brother, sister). Generally speaking there is a different bond between these types of relationships and the rest. They do have a special place for us. If you’re in the middle of something and you get a call, first thing you do is check caller ID to see who it is from. If it is a friend you let it go to your voicemail and you’ll call him later. If it is from a soliciting company then for sure you will not pick up. If it is your mother though you pick it up and if you really can’t talk you will tell her that you will call her back in a few minutes. This just shows how special some relationships are over others.
Now it is true that we have extended these close relationships to include other special people in our lives. If you get a call and when you look at the caller ID you see it is someone who you have a great deal of respect or a very close friend you tend to pick up the phone just as you did with your mother’s call. That’s what Jesus does here. This is not a disrespectful attitude on Jesus part toward His mother or brothers. But it is a situation He chose to bank on to let us in on what makes up His close circle. This is a special moment when Jesus opens up. Do you want to be buddies with Jesus? Do you want to be in His “close” circle? Do you want to have a really special place in His heart? Jesus says, here it is: “do the will of God”. If we do God’s will we’ll get special attention from Jesus. We can get the backstage access and even more. He will share things with us that He doesn’t share with everybody and we will have all the benefits that come from such a close relationship.
What is intriguing is that this is not on a special invitation basis only, but “whosoever”. Anybody can get in His close circle. WOW!!! I can get to be part of Jesus close circle!
