HEAD TO TOE

Everyone knows that professional golfer, Tiger Woods, dominates the PGA. In 2007, he earned nearly 12 million dollars by chasing the little white ball.

But what you might not know is that conservative estimates reveal that he earned an additional 100 million dollars from endorsement contracts! Even if you hate golf, you’ve probably seen him promoting American Express cards, Tag Heuer watches, or zipping across your TV screen in a Buick. (Side note: We believe that he might use American Express or wear a Tag, but does anybody actually believe Tiger would drive a Buick if he wasn’t paid to do so???)

Of Tiger Woods’ endorsements, the most prominent and lucrative is for Nike. This contract has put him way over the top when it comes to celebrity endorsements. His endorsement of Nike is so profound that he actually even dons the Nike swoosh when doing ads for other companies. Woods is a head-to-toe Nike man. He wears Nike footwear, clothing, gloves, and hats, and more.

The Bible says that when we live lives apart from the grace of Jesus Christ, that all of our best deeds and our best days are like “filthy rags” (Isa. 64:6). But the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus affords us something we all need…some new and imperishable threads. The Apostle Paul put it like this in Romans 13:14, “…clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.
By turning to Jesus (repentance), we can throw off our old, sin-stained clothes and slip on the perfectly pure white garment of Christ.

A good example of this is seen in the fourth vision of the prophet Zechariah.

1 Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the Lord, with Satan standing at his right side to accuse him. 2 The Lord said to Satan: “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! May the Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Isn’t this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?” 3 Now Joshua was dressed with filthy clothes as he stood before the Angel. 4 So He spoke to those standing before Him, “Take off his filthy clothes!” Then He said to him, “See, I have removed your guilt from you, and I will clothe you with splendid robes.” 5 Then I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So a clean turban was placed on his head, and they clothed him in garments while the Angel of the Lord was standing nearby. Zechariah 3:1-5 (HCSB)
The beauty of this prophecy is that the characters are all symbolic of future things and Joshua happens to represent us. It’s a beautiful picture of Jesus’ gift of salvation, sanctification, and righteousness through His grace. We just receive it...and put it on from head to toe.
