Jesus sends His disciples pretty early (too early by our standards). He called them to follow Him not too long ago and He already trusts them to do the work? Did Jesus want them to learn through real life situations? Kind of like saying: it’s time to get dirty, go make some mistakes, it’s ok, that’s how you learn. Or could it be that the essence of the message of the Kingdom of God is not that complicated, it is pretty simple, it doesn’t take too long to get it, even some simple fishermen were able to understand it? Again Jesus way of doing things is challenging us to reconsider what we do.
Were they successful? It all depends on how we define success. Did people repent? Did they embrace the teaching of the Kingdom of God? That’s what we would be after, right? Mark doesn’t seem to be interested in satisfying our curiosity; what he does report is that disciples did what they were told to do. Did people repent? Did they turn their heart to God? Were they saved? All we’re told is that people were healed and freed from demons. But isn’t people’s soul, their eternal destiny more important than some physical need? What a waste of time, we would say! But shouldn't this at least make us reconsider our ministry? Is people repentance our responsibility or God’s? What is our role and where should it end? These are some questions Mark is forcing us to ask of ourselves.
