What you can know is dependent upon to whom you listen. In Genesis 1, God shows that Adam is alone, and parades a series of non-wife options in front of him, and eventually shows him that which is good. In Eden, the serpent deceives Eve into eating the fruit of knowledge in spite of God's directions. She follows the serpent's voice instead of God's voice. Adam follows Eve's voice instead of God's voice. This narrative continues throughout Scripture, and when Pharaoh fails to listen to God's voice through Moses, and God's people fail to listen to the legion of prophets, the consequences are disastrous.
Fast forwarding to the Transfiguration, Jesus drags Peter, James and John up to the mountain. Appearing with Moses and Elijah, it is made clear that Jesus is the One we should be listening to? Who are we listening to? Are we listening to Scripture? If we take an inventory of our life and look at how we spend our money and treat our enemies, are we listening to Jesus and what Jesus says through His Word? Or do our lives reflect that we are listening more to society?
Do we think the Gospel is worth other people listening to? When we earn the right to talk into other people's lives, do we think it's worthwhile for them to hear the Gospel, with transforms, or do we instead give banal self-help advice or platitudes that you could get from Oprah or Dr. Phil?
