Pseudo Riches

Daniel 5:16-17, 29-30 NLT

I am told that you can give interpretations and solve difficult problems. If you can read these words and tell me their meaning, you will be clothed in purple robes of royal honor, and you will have a gold chain placed around your neck. You will become the third highest ruler in the kingdom.” Daniel answered the king, “Keep your gifts or give them to someone else, but I will tell you what the writing means.

Then at Belshazzar’s command, Daniel was dressed in purple robes, a gold chain was hung around his neck, and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom. That very night Belshazzar, the Babylonian king, was killed.

Daniel was favored by the Lord. He had deep communion with God. As a result, there was a conviction that governed Daniel's life - God is sovereign and this life is temporary.

When the king offered Daniel riches and wealth, Daniel didnt jump and take it. Instead he told the king to keep it. Daniel wasnt wealthy, and im sure the position would have afforded him positive influence in the kingdom. But Daniel still said no. I image Daniel kindly denying the offer with a bit of a smirk and inner chuckle. Daniel knew it wouldnt last. He knew it wasnt the kings to give and God can move it around whenever He desires. Daniel knew the riches werent good, as they didnt belong to the king anyhow.

I wish i can wrap my head around the idea that riches are really pseudo riches...God owns it all. Like King Belshazzar, the riches arent mine to give. Everything belongs to the Lord and its His will I need to submit to.

Lord, You love us and give us plenty of opportunity to steward your gifts. May i always honor you with my finances and steward my influence well. AMEN.
