For this reason... I always hear this read at weddings and wonder, for what reason? Here is a classic example of why context is a must!
Verse 23 gives us a peak into the "reason" God brought every animal created "out of the ground" and brought to Adam to see if it would be a "suitable helper", but no suitable helper was found. The only suitable helper came when God caused the man to sleep and preformed the first surgery in history. Woman was made from man. For the first time God created life not from dust of formless cosmos, but from life! The perfect pairing came, not from dust and dust, but life from life.
In the same way afterward, God gives man the mandate to create more life from life. "Be fruitful and multiply" As two become one flesh, new life is formed. New life is formed from the most intimate way two humans can know each other, but it still pales in comparison to how intimate God knows his creation.
Marriage is used throughout scripture to give us an example of the love God has for us because it is the most tangible expression of the type of selfless, intimate love God has for his bride.
