the truth plainly

Here we see Paul talking about setting the truth out there plainly. I heard it said that someone can be really good at preaching the gospel but they cant make the gospel any better... or something like that. A words that comes to mind when I hear this is gimmick, or dare I even say some sermon illustrations. Now there is nothing wrong with a good illustration but shouldn't we always look for the word to speak for itself?
