Don't I mean more to you than 10 kings?

In the short interaction between the bitter Hannah and her confused husband in 1 Sam 1:8, the writer is giving us a preview of what is to come in this book. What Elkanah means by his question is, "Am I not enough to satisfy you?" Hannah's unspoken answer was, "no, you're not." And by doing so, she was - in effect - rejecting her husband. Fast forward to 1 Sam 8:7 where God says the people have not rejected Samuel as their leader, but God. In the same way Hannah overlooked the endless love of her husband and desired to be like her rival, Peninnah, the Israelites forsook the perfect love and leadership of their God because they desired to have a human king and be like all the other rival nations.
