Two part religion
The classic two parter. God requires two basic things for our religion to be pure. First we have to take care of others. Second we have to make sure that when we are helping clean others their lives up, we don't let our life become sullied. Impurities can be photoshoped to look pretty good.
The relationship to the great commandment is obvious here. James wants us to seek to please God with purity of thought, deed, and action as well as make sure those around us are taken care of.
Take these two things in the context of verse 22 and life's pursuits and you get a basic plan of action for life.
- Watch your lifestyle using the fruit of the spirit as a guideline.
- Be aware of real needs around you and do what you can to meet them.
- A little less talk and a lot more action.
