As was customary in the times of Saul and of David, when an army or a new king took over the entire family of the preceeding ruler were slain. The story of Mephibosheth is yet another story of Gods redemptive power and His magnificent mercy. Its also a story of hope and love for those that are "lame" or disabled. My youngest son is disabled and I wonder all the time what plans God may have in store for him. I can only pray and hope it ends up like this story. Mephibosheth taken from the house by his nurse into hiding after his family is murdered to a life of hiding, fearing that the new king would have his life. David, a man after Gods own heart was there and ready to show the Fathers grace to another. The crippled Mephibosheth was brought before the king where he was given great honor, made to eat at the kings table and his grandfathers property restored to him. To go from a life of hiding to being loved by the king, what a great honor. I am so humbled to know that I was once in a life of hiding; hiding from God because of my sin and rebebllion from him. Thanks to Jesus, I was restored to my place at the Kings table, He has given me a new life free from hiding in the low places and free to fall prostrate before my Lord and say "here is your servant". The fact that Mephibosheth was crippled just helps to bring an extra joy to my heart to see that God shows His mercy to those in need, and when the world looks at us like we are crippled or lame God still has big plans for us.
