He Saved Not Himself

In each of these three verses in Luke, our Lord Jesus was asked to save Himself. In verse 35, it was the rulers. In verse 37, it was the soldiers. In verse 39, it was the malefactors that were crucified with Him. We all know that the Lord had the power, for He Himself sayeth in another scripture, "Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and He shall presently give Me more than twelve legions of angels?"

But how else then could He have accomplished the work of salvation if He had saved Himself? Romans 8:32 tells us about Him "that spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all." Was it not for "us all" that led Him to the cross, and then not to save Himself?

Instead of SAVING Himself, Galatians 1:4 tells us that He GAVE Himself for our sins. And this giving was out of love from the Saviour's heart.
