I'm reading (slowly) through 1st Samuel right now, because I haven't read much in the OT lately, and I thought it would be a good place to start. Let me tell you, it has been pretty cool. Anyway, these verses really stuck out to me the other day as a wonderful example of God's mercy even in the OT, when we usually think of him more in terms of justice and vengeance.
What really struck me about this passage is that even though God's Chosen People had screwed up and asked for a king when they already had The King, God didn't just get rid of the king once the people realized their sin and repented. He worked through their stubbornness for his own purposes, and as long as his people "worship and serve him heart and soul."
So what I am getting out of this is that even when you sin, you have not screwed up God's plan, and that you shouldn't focus on your sin, but on God. Pretty cool. :)
