They Doubted Him
Luke 5:21 - They asked Him the question, "Who can forgive sins, but God alone?" They doubted His DIVINITY. Of course He can! But this forgiveness of sins came at a precious price to Him, for it required Him to go to the cross.
Luke 5:30 - "Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?" They doubted His SANCTITY. He was set apart, but not FROM sinners, but to do the work to SAVE sinners.
Luke 5:33 "Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?" They doubted His PIETY. Even by eating and drinking, He can do them to the glory of God - for it was in these mundane activities that sinners can come to repentance."
Luke 6:2 - "Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the Sabbath days?" They doubted His AUTHORITY, not knowing that He was the One who instituted the Sabbath in the first place. He had to tell them later that He, the Son of Man, is LORD also of the Sabbath.
