Paul's advice on how to stop the pity-party

Paul's command in this passage is clear, "rejoice in the Lord!" I think it is important to to note that he doesn't list any exceptions to his command. He doesn't tie rejoicing to our circumstances, our situations, or our feelings. He simply says rejoice! Like the song we sang as kids, "Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice." Paul tells us that our rejoicing will be a safeguard for us. Our rejoicing, our praise, our joy in the Lord will protect us and strengthen us. It's really easy to get weighed down with our problems, to focus on our circumstances, to throw a pity-party for ourselves. But Paul tell sus that all that junk disappears when we praise God and rejoice in Him! This is great advice, especially coming from a guy in prison!
