We see here that God formed us out of the dust of the ground. This is akin to how a potter forms and fashions clay. Look at Isa. 45:9; Jer. 18:6; Job 33:6. Humans and animals alike have the breath of life. The same word used here is the same word used in ch.1:30 and Job 33:4. The difference is that only man is made in the image of God and only man became a living soul. Animals have no soul. Man has a unique relationship with God as we are His servants. We also have a unique relationship with animals as His stewards over the animals. Let's look at Ps. 8:3-9.
The question is this: Why did God make man to have a living soul? We'll talk about that a little later on in chapter 3.
