Jacob was afraid and hesitated to face the result of his sin. He sent everything else over to the other side first, then he hesitated even more struggling and wrestling with God. He wanted God's blessing on this situation.
Finally, after a long hard struggle God gave Jacob what he wanted. It appears that God loved that Jacob would not leave Him without the blessing; that he was going to be strong enough and stubborn enought to persist, even with God. This is difficult for all of us....to persist and refuse to accept anything less than God's blessing in the worst of all experiences.
So God humbled Jacob by disabling him, but God also blessed Jacob.
In the blessing God speaks in the present for Jacob who will go exhausted and humbly (handicapped) over the brook and to finally face his fear. But there is another blessing that God speaks of for all of Israel. "as a prince hast thou power with God and with men" and because of this you will prevail (it is interesting that the NASB version which I enjoy reading does not mention this verse.)
With God, given us by grace through Christ we have the power to prevail! This we know from the gospels but it was spoken of here, way back in Genesis. Praise to God!!!!
