The Conquering King
"The Lord is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land." Ps. 10:16
As I read today's passage, I am reminded of Daniel 2 where King Nebuchadnezzar had dreamt of a statue that represented the kingdoms of this world being smashed apart by a rock. In this prophetic interpretation, Daniel reiterated that “In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever." (Dan. 2:44). What an amazing declaration of the Kingdom of God!
In this world, we see nations rising and falling as men and women with ambitions seek power and dominion over one another. Even as I read through the rest of Ps. 10, I see the characteristics of those who seek to build an earthly "nation". I am not pointing my finger towards political leaders or obvious 'high flyers'. Here, a "nation" could be defined as any power structure that is built in the name of man, not God. As we allow the Word of God to reveal in us... let us think about whether these characteristics pertain to us at all? If so, could we also be building a "nation" that will one day topple under the hand of God?
- arrogance (v.2)
- hunts down the weak who are caught in the schemes (v.2)
- boasts about the cravings of his heart (v.3)
- blesses the greedy and reviles the Lord (v.3)
- in his pride He does not seek God... no room for God (v.4)
- ways are [seemingly] prosperous... rejects God's laws... sneers at his enemies (v.5)
- says to himself, "Nothing will ever shake me".. "No one will ever do me harm" (v.6)
- mouth full of lies and threats, trouble and evil are under his tongue (v.7)
- murders the innocent (v.8), catches the helpless (v.9), victims are crushed (v.10)
- thinks that God will never notice (v.11)... will never call him into account (v.13)
Granted, this is a rather graphic and extreme account but when we begin to raise up a 'nation' that is apart from God, we drift in our intentions and God calls us as "wicked". It may seem innocent and harmless for us to build our little "castles" where we are the rulers BUT the Bible is clear. There is only One God. There will only be One Kingdom. There is only One Ruler - Jesus. God promises that EVERYTHING will be put under His feet. He will rule forever and ever and no "nation" will stand in His land.
