Usher, Elders, Deacons Really Should Have Side Arms
Peter and John just healed a man who has been cripple from birth and he is, "holding on to Peter and John." People begin to talk and are amazed. Peter begins to address the crowd. He shares the story of Jesus and what He did. Now he is doing this in the temple. Imagine a man preaching in your church in the coffee/foyer/morning snack area before church even started.
Now fast forward a little, Peter and John are confronted by the Captain of the Temple Guard and the priests. The priests somewhere realized they would have to get their hands dirty and not in a Mother Teresa kind of way. So, hire someone else to get dirty and a new job market is born, temple bouncers. Further, their is a Captain, which means this is a hierarchy militant machine just for temple security. Throw into the mix they have the ability to arrest people, which means the priests one day had another bright idea to move from a pastoral position to a dictatorial role in the community, "you know what we really need the ability to put people in prison, just in case."
Imagine if ushers could arrest someone, "sir your child is making to much noise during service could you come with me", once out of the sanctuary out come the cuffs and daddy goes to jail. Ha!
When we get scared we tend to tighten our grip on the things we are afraid to lose. How afraid then were the priests?
I work in a church as a youth pastor and God is working with me and my fear. Fear of what people think, fear of losing students because I am to radical, or not radical enough, fear that I will be found out that I am just a guy.
