Listening to God

We live in an attention deficit culture. When someone tries to talk to us we often don't hear them because we are engrossed in a TV show or sports game or a video game or on a smart phone.

Technology has made it easier to communicate with those far away from us often to the detriment to those closest to us.

We wonder, "Where is God? Why doesn't He help me in my situation?" How often has God attempted to get our attention but we missed His voice because we were preoccupied? Perhaps that's why God allows pain in our lives? His still, small voice goes unanswered so He uses a job layoff, a car accident, a heart attack, or even a death of a loved one to speak?

What if we trained ourselves to slow down and listen for God's voice? What if we developed the habit of creating regular time to focus our attention on Him? Could we, like Samuel learn to recognize God's still voice?

When we find ourselves hearing God's voice our response should be like Samuel's, "Yes, Lord. I'm listening. What do you want me to do?"
