My Catholic friends have always had a thing for Mary. They have icons around the house, they pray to her as an intercessor, and they even guard her statue at church. I've always been puzzled by this worship, what a bevvy of folks might label heresy (sp?) and sinful idolatry. But, upon reading this I gott aadmit, Mary rocked!
Think about this, now. Here was ateenage girl waiting to be married, discovering she was going to becoem pregnant well befroe it was cool for her to have belly-full of boy. When she gathers her wits after learning of her destiny, she high-tails it to a relative, a woman at the opposite end of the age spectrum with a similar due date. Upon being validated, she breaks out in a song.
Now, I'm sure this didn't go down in a Monty Python sort of musical manner, but I do believe she recognized God working. So, you're pregnant, unmarried, and pretty well confounded, and how do you react? You give praise to God, recognizing He has put you in a remarkable position.
For this alone, Mary rocks!
Now, for an application. When I am faced with adversity, do I respond with gratitude and praise? Should I? Yes. I'm not so naive to think Mary didn't have any negative reaction, but the fact that Luke documented her praise says she got over her "plight" speedy quick enough to see the positive side of the situation.
Surely, the vast majority of negatives I encounter are nowhere near as daunting or dramatic as being faced with carrying teh Savior to term. So, quit the whining. More important, seek to praise God for the adversity as it is one way to come closer to Him.
