God is a sovereign God who is in control of everything. In the beginning of this chapter, God said that He had given the king of Ai into the Israelites hands, and surely it was so. God's timing is very funny though. He first let the Israelites lose to Ai because of Achan's actions in stealing the loot. Furthermore, this time around, God let them take from the loot. If only Achan had waited! It wasn't so much the loot itself that God wanted or did not want, it was the hearts of the people . He knew that the first loss was necessary for them to see it was not how strong they were, but how strong He was (funny how they didn't learn this lesson from Jericho..but they got very cocky when they sent spies to Ai). He knew the first ban on the loot of Jericho was necessary to remind the Israelites that their reason for conquering other nations was unlike the reason other nations conquered. It was not to gather lots of loot, but rather it was to glorify God. As such, this time, they were allowed to take the loot. He was in control.
It is always hard for me to see the point of things, especially as I am going through it. I don't totally see why He does things the way He does. I don't see why I face losses in my walk with God when I feel like I had just come from so many victories...until much later, looking back I see that my pride had gotten the best of me and I had gotten self-righteous. I don't see why I don't get blessed with certain things..until much later when I see that I had made an idol of the things that I wanted to be 'blessed' with. It's always in retrospect that it finally becomes clear why God did it the way He did, and I must say, He really knows what is best. Therefore, I must strive to obey Him even in the midst of the wildest storms and temptations, knowing that He knows best.
