Exercise: Asking God To Reveal Your Door
I wanted to encourage us with an exercise as it relates to Revelation 3:20. For too long, the Church has made this verse about the lost, the 'unsaved', the sinners who have yet to know grace. However, this is quite the opposite. This is actually Jesus talking TO the Church. He's knocking on our heart so that we would dine with Him. So here is the exercise which I have done this a few times at different points in my life:
- Read the verse over.
- Close your eyes and ask Jesus to reveal to you what the door of your heart looks like. Maybe it's a huge heavy, rusted iron gate or maybe is a transparent, glass slide door, or maybe it's a doggie door or a screen door? Only you and Him will be able to figure that out.
- Once the door is revealed to you, you have to ask Jesus where He is. Is He on the other side knocking? Is He on the inside of the door?
- If He's on the outside, will you let him in?
- If He's on the inside, will you dine with Him?
Let Jesus reveal the door to you and once it's revealed, make sure you don't leave it closed! This is about relationship! If it's a big, scary door, ask Jesus to open it for you, to help you; ask Him to help you make it open more easily.
One friend of my did this and Jesus was outside of the screen door on his porch. He saw Jesus and invited him in. Upon being inside, Jesus asked Him "So when are we going to eat?". My friend asked, "Well, what would you like?" Jesus replied, "Tacos!"
Now, I will pause there as this might be offensive or distasteful to think of Jesus eating (He is glorified, for for crying out loud!) let alone wanting tacos. But bear with me...
My friend quickly asked Jesus, "Tacos?". "Yes", He said, "But not just any tacos! I want to make them like you used to make them when your kids were little with the assembly line; one taking the meat, the other the lettuce, the other the cheese! And then after everyone was done making them together, it was time to eat! Let's do that!"
As you can see, now having tacos with Jesus is an amazing thing. For Jesus to recall a memory of my friend's past that was full of family and intimacy, was something of Him calling for the same in their relationship. The reality here is that His same call is for all of us. He knows us, through and through, and He wants to dine with us. It's not just about opening the door to Him, but it's about pursuing that friendship with the King of Kings.
I hope this encourages you today and I would love to hear your experiences!
