Trying to Trick God

In context of this prophetic book, we see that Israel has become a people filled with idols made by their own hands. They are a people influenced negatively by others around them, and have begun to worship false gods.

Yet, it also appears that they are still trying to perform sacrifices to the LORD.

This seems to be one of many places in Scripture where God's people are portrayed as truly trusting in things other than their God, while at the same time, they believe that the LORD exists and is real, but they have such a small view of God that they believe they can somehow trick Him or manipulate him by offering sacrifices.

Many might look at this and say that God cares about their heart and not their outward actions. And there is some truth to that, but we need to be cautious about overemphasizing this idea. Certainly God does care about the heart, but He also cares about outward actions. He cares that we make decisions that are right and just, that we treat others with kindness and mercy. There is no false dichotomy between God caring about our heart vs. caring about our actions. He cares about both. But in Israel's case, they have neither. Their selfish hearts have lead to a lack in kindness and mercy and justice, and so their outward sacrifices to the LORD are inconsistent with their idolatrous behavior.

The outward actions of sacrifices serve as a way to appease God, to manipulate Him to keep Him on their side. Its an attempt to somehow satisfy God without loving Him and truly living the way He wants.

God wants them to live rightly, to express kindness to others, because those outward actions reflect a heart that truly worships Him and gives Him the place He deserves.

This text can serve as a mirror, where we can look into our souls from the inside out. Are we trying to manipulate God? Are we trying to go through the motions of religious activities to appease God and keep Him "on our side" while we selfishly pursue our own ambitions? Or do we live rightly, do we truly express kindness and mercy to others?

This text provides an opportunity to turn from our attempts at tricking God into blessing us, and to turn towards caring for others more than caring about ourselves, because we have a God who lead us out of slavery and will ultimately lead us into the promised land of peace.
