To fight or not to fight?

The book of proverbs blows my mind every time I read it. Usually if I'm not studying a certain book or subject I jump to Proverbs and read whatever proverb matches up with the day of the month.
Anyway, I was recently talking this subject over with a friend of mine who was having problems with people starting rumors about himself AND his family. The scene that kept playing in his mind was "If somebody says something to me about this I'm probably going to throw some haymakers." Now in all honesty... when I put myself into his shoes, I started getting worked up and thinking that I (or my flesh, rather) would want to do the same exact thing! But here we see that God tells us that it's honorable to pull our punches or even a harsh comeback (which causes/sustains strife).
God also says that our battle is not with any other human being, but with principalities and the devil.
And lastly, He promises us that HE will take care of the devil in Romans 16:19 and see to it that peace is restored in our lives.
