God appearing before man here. It is signifigant that God did not give Jacob HIS name because he had already given Jacob his name. God says, WHY ARE YOU ASKING ME MY NAME, YOU IDIOT, I HAVE JUST GIVEN YOU MY NAME.

You (Jacob) are so identified now with Me (Jesus). You are the Israel of God. Esau forfited the right to be the Israel of God.

In calling Jacob Israel, and in Jacob saying he had seen God face to face, he came to realize that God have given all of us the name of Israel.
