Waiting
How long? This is a question that I have heard several times over the last couple of years in relation to the economic crisis we are currently facing. How long will I have to wait to get a job? How long will I have to wait to find out if I am poising my house?
The writer of this Psalm finds himself in a waiting period that begs the question, "How long?" In his response, we see some wise statements about surviving times of waiting.
First, in verse 3 , he gives his statement of trust an confidence in God. Then he gives himself some instructions on how not to make the waiting time any worse on himself. He talks about his anger. When we are waiting on something, we can loose our patience and let our anger take over. We can even direct it at people who are trying to support us, like our spouses and children. To guard against this danger, he tells himself to wait before responding. Think about what you are going to say, before you open your mouth.
Next, he says to be careful to watch your attitude as you worship. Your loved ones are not your enemy and neither is God. God is the one who will give you strength during the waiting time. He is the one who promises to never leave you. Make sure to maintain your love relationship with God.
Finally, he focuses on what is really important in life, as he contrasts his joy to the abundant things that others might have. He recognizes that the joy God has given him allows him to sleep in peace, which is worth a fortune during times of waiting.
Times of waiting can be very frustrating, but they can also be times of great personal growth if we use them to reflect on our relationships, our values, our goals, and commit to doing what is right.
