This is a case of "too little, too late". The Israelites had their chance to trust God and move into the Promised Land, but despite the insistence of two God-fearing men, fear and lack of trust caused Israel to retreat and be cursed to wander in the desert for 40 years. Upon hearing of their fate, many of the men decided to go ahead and attack their enemies, and thought perhaps God would reconsider and fight for them. But God had sworn that there would be consequences for their lack of faith, and so the men attacked without God's blessing, and they were routed. I wonder how many times God would bless us except for our lack of faith. He's proved Himself again and again and yet we still doubt. And just like the Israelites who lacked faith, so we have consequences for our unbelief.
