God's Voice

Here we see the three ways that God spoke to His people - dreams, Urim, and prophets. The Urim and Thummin were contained in the breastplate worn by the high priest. Exactly how they were used is unclear, but one tradition states that they may have been similar in shape and size and hidden in a pouch on the breastplate. Kings or generals would face the priest and ask simple yes or no questions concerning a serious matter that affected the whole nation, such as if they would win a battle. the priest would reach in the pouch and pull out the Urrim or Thummin which would indicate yes or no. It may have to be confirmed a couple of times. At any rate it was one of the ways that a high official such as Saul could get an answer from God. But in this case God wasn't answering or speaking through any means.

How does God speak to us today? Primarily through His son Jesus. Jesus is the Word of God and all of Scripture should be viewed with the life and teachings of Jesus in mind. But I don't believe that we should put limits on how God might speak to us personally. He can use almost anything such as dreams, promptings, circumstances, friends, strangers, and even enemies to guide us. Just be careful to confirm his guidance through the Word, wise counsel, and multiple affirmations. Remember, Satan can speak to us in these ways too.
