Christ is Enough
- Galatians 1:6 (ESV)
- Galatians 1:7 (ESV)
- Galatians 1:8 (ESV)
- Galatians 1:9 (ESV)
- Galatians 1:10 (ESV)
Points
1. Paul is astonished that the church had allowed others to persuade them to accept a Gospel other than the one from Christ.
2. Anyone who is preaching a Gospel other than the one given them is wrong and should not be listened to.
3. Paul is not seeking to please man, but to please God because he is a servant of Christ.
Personalize
Paul challenges the church to not listen to false teacher who add more to the claims of Christ. Is Christ enough? Was the work of grace and salvation completed on the cross? These are questions that some would answer with yes, but... You still must keep the law. You must live a good life to be accepted into God's kingdom. You have to seek self righteousness and abstain from certain things to be right with God. A faith based on human effort is not a faith based in Christ alone. Is Christ enough? Yes He is enough. Christ is all we need for salvation. This is the meaning of the gospel.
Many believe that if there is no self effort in salvation then the Gospel is too easy and simple. It is our tendency to think effort is associated with meaning. For us, salvation is simple, but for Christ it was an act of love and sacrifice. The Gospel is not simple and it profoundly goes beyond our understanding and efforts. We love religion. We believe that the more effort we put into something the more we gain, but in the Gospel the more we surrender to Christ the more we gain. We must die to our self efforts and yield to Christ's effort and sacrifice as demonstrated on the cross. Salvation comes through our surrender to the person of Christ and accepting the work of the cross.
Prayer
Lord we praise You for the salvation we have received through Christ. It is in Christ alone we have found salvation and we know Christ is enough and we find rest from our self effort.
